More than 100,000 people have downloaded Martin Lewis’ guide to reclaiming PPI for free – but that didn’t stop one spam caller from a claims management firm trying their luck.
"Like everyone else, over the years I’ve had a good number of spam texts and calls telling me I was owed “£3,728” or whatever their baloney lie is (these neither mean you aren’t or are owed PPI, they’re just random spam)," Martin explained in a blog post .
But if you’re the founder of MoneySavingExpert , the good news is you’ve got a pretty impressive comeback when they do.
"On one occasion it was a woman who called, and for one of the few times in my life, I couldn’t resist using the ‘Don’t you know who I am?’ line," he said.
"From my (admittedly very sketchy) memory, after she’d given me the PPI sales spiel, it went something like this…
Me: “Have you heard of Martin Lewis of MoneySavingExpert?”
Her: (Pause) “Er… yes.”
Me: “Well, you’re talking to him.”
Her: (Longer pause) “Er, OK… oops.”
Me: “Please do mention to your bosses that I’d prefer not to be called again.”
The money-saving guru thought nothing more of it… until last week he had a tweet from the caller, a lady called Joyce , who said she never forgot their exchange.
And there was better news as her bosses also snapped to it.
"You also tweeted about it. I’ve never seen management move so fast and do so much work," Joyce said.
"Lol, I nearly died except I recognised his voice, what do you saw when the guru answers the phone!!! Management pulled the call recordings immediately especially after they saw his tweet and realised I wasn’t talking s****.
"The funniest and most accurate use ever of ‘Do you know who I am… ‘"
