Virgin Trains has announced it’s lifted restrictions on peak time tickets out of London for the entirety of summer.
The pricey rail network said it’s removed peak restrictions on Friday travel to make life easier for spontaneous staycationers over the next five weeks.
The move, which covers Fridays from 20 July to 31 August, means that customers who buy an off-peak ticket will no longer need to wait for the start of the off-peak window on Friday evenings.
It means a customer turning up at Euston Station at 4pm and travelling on the next train to Birmingham will pay £54 instead of £88 each way. Likewise, anyone travelling to Manchester, will pay £85.90, marking a £125.55 saving.
Of course, travellers can save even more by booking online in advance. The Virgin Trains Cheapest Fare Finder Tool allows you to view the cheapest fares ahead of time – starting with £27 to Manchester and £9 to Birmingham New Street.
These tickets cannot be swapped for peak time travel however, as they’re specific to the time and date booked. We’ve got heaps more tips on how to find cheap train tickets, here .

The new promotion comes as research shows we are far from being a nation of queue-loving, stiff upper-lip Brits; in fact, we embrace spontaneity and last-minute decisions for weekend plans.
Virgin found that 93% of all social media conversations about the weekend refer to acting spontaneously, with excited conversations kicking in at 4pm on a Friday.
Almost 100,000 tweets relating to weekends were analysed, and results show the most prominent hashtags are#spontaneous, #spontaneity, #lastminute, #TGIFand #latedecision.
Sarah Copley, at Virgin Trains said: “We know the working week is busy for most, with day-to-day routines often not allowing much opportunity to be spontaneous. We see summer weekends as the perfect time to think a little differently about how you choose to spend time in the UK.
"Our summer promotion will enable Virgin Trains customers to extend their weekends with ease and be more flexible with their plans. We hope as many people as possible will make the most of their summer Fridays starting that little bit earlier, choosing to travel and explore the many great places we visit along the West Coast with friends and family."
