Boris Johnson recoils in horror when shown how inmates smuggle drugs into prison

Boris Johnson appeared first baffled – then horrified – as a prison officer explained that inmates sometimes hide drugs up their bums.

A prison officer was given the unfortunate task of explaining a body scan image to the Prime Minister.

The image, he said, featured a kinder egg full of cannabis inserted into a person's posterior.

Mr Johnson appeared shocked that such a thing could take place.

"A Kinder egg?" he said, still lacking a full grasp of the situation – "is that inside the…?"

Justice Secretary Robert Buckland, standing behind Johnson, confirmed the PM's suspicions with gusto: "YES".

But the penny still hadn't dropped.

Johnson asked: "He's ingested it?"

"He's plugged it," the prison officer explained, with impeccable patience.

Buckland remained quietly squirming behind them.

Recoiling in horror, the Prime Minister said: "HE'S PLUGGED IT?"

Johnson then appeared to be shown a second image of a prisoner who had used a similar technique to smuggle tobacco into the prison.

The PM said: "You are joking. How's he done that?"

On a visit to HMP Leeds – a category B local prison in Armley which was one of the country's most overcrowded when it was inspected two years ago – Mr Johnson said his Government was "putting money into every aspect of the criminal justice system".

He has made a series of spending pledges since entering office, and the latest has further fuelled speculation that he is preparing for an early general election amid the Brexit deadlock in Parliament.

"I don't want to see prisons just be factories to turn bad people worse. We need to be making sure that they are educated and there's not a culture of gangsterism and drugs in the prison system," Mr Johnson told reporters.
