Yanis Varoufakis ridiculed EU leaders’ hope that “things would go back to normal” under a Joe Biden US Presidency. Joe Biden, who is on the verge of winning the presidency, has 264 electoral votes according to the latest Associated Press count. However, Mr Varoufakis dismissed claims from Brussels that a Joe Biden win would “reverse the effects of Trump”.
Speaking to the BBC, the former Greek finance minister said: “European leaders were banking on this transition from Trump to Biden.
“They were pinning their hopes to return things back to normal. With NATO, with the defence umbrella of the US again protecting Europe and Germany.
“I fear European leaders will not be very pleased with what they find out in the next few months or years.
“Trump may have gone, or may be on his way out but the shift in geopolitics that he effected in the last four years is not going to be reversed.”
JUST IN: Boris must take stock of Biden’s victory – UK cannot be left behind
He suggested that era of Trump-style politics will endure in Europe and the US for the foreseeable future.
This comes despite Joe Biden’s pledge on Friday to end the “total, unrelenting, unending warfare” of Trump-era politics.
In a short address to the American people, the former Vice-President voiced confidence that his win over President Donald Trump would soon be declared.
He called for calm and patience, after Donald Trump warned he will dispute the result of the election over claims of widespread voter fraud – without providing any evidence.
Mr Biden said: “The numbers tell us a clear and convincing story. We are going to win this race.”
Mr Varoufakous noted that Mr Biden will suffer gridlock in his first term, after the Democrats failed to take the US Senate.
He said: “With the great success of Trump, sadly, in securing a stalemate in the senate, Biden now has been liberated from having to implement the Green New Deal.
“This is a very bad outcome, the worst outcome, for progressives.
“Without control of the senate, he cannot enact a Green New Deal. Now he has a perfect excuse for not implementing it.”

European leaders have largely reacted with caution to the US election result.
Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the German defence minister, said: “This is a very explosive situation.
“This is a situation that can lead to a constitutional crisis in the US, as experts are rightly saying. And it is something that must cause us great concern.”
Some European leaders have suggested that even if Mr Biden is declared the winner, he would be a weakened president without a Senate majority.
France’s finance minister, Bruno Le Maire said the US “has not been a friendly partner for the EU”.
He added: “Whether Joe Biden or Trump is chosen by the Americans does not change this strategic fact. The American continent has detached itself from the European continent and it is time for Europeans to assume their responsibilities.”
One leader, the Slovenian prime minister Janez Janša, even proclaimed Trump the winner.
