Yesterday marked the highest number of migrants crossing the Channel on small boats in one day so far this year.
616 people were detected making the perilous journey, the Home Office said.
The statistics come after a parliamentary report suggested the Government’s Illegal Migration Bill may lead to asylum seekers taking “more dangerous routes” to the UK, benefit people smugglers and worsen trafficking.
An inquiry by the cross-party Joint Committee on Human Rights said the government said the Bill had not provided any evidence to show it would deter further Channel crossings.
